“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.”
– Anthony J. D’Angelo –
This popular North American tradition is observed in the United States and Canada on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks; but if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early. The Groundhog Day ceremony first reported in 1886 is held at Punxsutawney in western Pennsylvania, centering on a semi-mythical groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, has become the most frequently attended ceremony. The groundhog is of the hibernating rodent family of large ground squirrels. This day typically, during non-pandemic times, draws crowds upwards of 40,000 since the 1993 movie with Bill Murray, Ground Hog Day. In Ohio, they have Buckeye Chuck and Staten Island Chuck in NY. forecasting weather on this day and In D.C., it is Potomac Phil. Here in NC, we have Sir Walter Wally, who is supposedly 58% accurate.
