John Francis “Jack” Welch Jr. (November 19, 1935 – March 1, 2020) was raised in the Peabody/Salem area of MA in New England. He started as an engineer making $10,500 in 1960, approximately $95k in today’s dollars. At General Electric, he grew revenue from $26B in 1980 when he became CEO to $130B when he left after famously using the Six Sigma quality program from Motorola. When he retired from GE, he received a severance payment of $417 million, the largest such payment in business history.
